Department Information
The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.
Job Information
As the Senior Finance Officer, you will play a key role in ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and efficiency of financial operations across the Government of the Northwest Territories. You will lead a team at the heart of financial transaction processing, provide expert advice, and help ensure compliance with legislation, policies, and standards, all while contributing to continuous improvement in financial services. You will be a trusted resource for both your team and departments, helping to resolve complex financial issues and supporting sound decision-making across the organization. This role is ideal for you if you have strong knowledge of accounting principles, proven supervisory experience in a high-volume environment, excellent communication and organizational skills, and the ability to interpret policies, manage competing deadlines, and support accurate, compliant financial operations
Key Responsibilities:
- Oversee and approve financial transactions including accounts payable, receivable, payroll, and journal entries to ensure accuracy and compliance
- Provide financial and technical advice to staff and client departments, supporting consistent application of policies and best practices
- Lead, coach, and support a team to ensure timely, accurate processing and strong performance
- Monitor, reconcile, and analyze financial data, resolving discrepancies and supporting reporting requirements
- Contribute to process improvements, reporting, and planning activities within Financial and Employee Shared Services
Key Qualifications:
A relevant undergraduate degree, one year of experience supervising, and one of the following:
- completion of four competencies of the Canadian CPA Professional Education Program with three (3) years of accounting experience
- completion of the Canadian Payroll Association's Certified Payroll Manager Certificate (CPM), with three (3) years directly related experience
- completion of the Certified Employee Benefit Specialist Designation with three (3) years directly related experience
Equivalencies:
- High school diploma, one year of supervisory experience, and five (5) years of relevant experience. Of the five (5) years experience three (3) must be directly related.
- All other equivalencies will be considered on a case-by-case basis
Relevant education fields may include, but are not limited to, Accounting, Finance, and Business Administration or Commerce with a concentration in accounting or finance.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $54.44 per hour to $65.03 per hour (approximately $106,158 - $126,809.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
