The mandate of the Department of Justice is to administer justice, including policing, community justice, victims services and corrections in the Northwest Territories. This mandate will be carried out in a manner which respects community and indigenous values and encourages communities to assume increasing responsibilities.
Job Information
Located in Hay River and reporting to the Manager, Territorial Court, the Court Officer 1 position provides registry services and courtroom support for criminal and civil matters to the Territorial Court of the Northwest Territories, Justice of the Peace and to the Youth Justice Court. This position ensures the efficient operation of the Courts in the courtroom and chambers, exercises statutory authority in accepting and processing court documents, and prepares documents for court sittings.
Some of the knowledge, skills and abilities required for this position are:
- Knowledge of and ability to interpret, explain and apply the Rules of Court and federal and
territorial legislation that govern court actions. - Knowledge of the role of an officer of the court and the independence of the judiciary.
- Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in challenging situations.
- Ability to write well and accurate record information;
- Public speaking skills to read charges, open/close court, etc.
- Ability to be self-motivated, detailed oriented, organized, and able to work independently in a public environment that requires policies, procedures and protocol to be adhered to under strict time constraints.
- Data entry skills and computer knowledge, and ability to consistently operate in a computerized environment.
The above knowledge, skills and abilities are typically attained by:
A relevant diploma with two years of experience.
Additional Requirements - Intermediate First Aid, CPR C and AED certification is required and will be provided to the successful candidate within six months of employment. Recertification will be provided as required.
Equivalencies may include;
- A diploma in Social Science or Justice field with two years of experience in justice. Intermediate First Aid, CPR C and AED certification is required and will be provided to the successful candidate within six months of employment. Recertification will be provided as required.
- A high school diploma with 4 years of experience in justice. Intermediate First Aid, CPR C and AED certification is required and will be provided to the successful candidate within six months of employment. Recertification will be provided as required.

Travel
The incumbent in this position will be required to travel approximately twice a month, often via small aircraft. Approximately 5 - 10 days per occurrence.

Equivalencies
Equivalencies may be considered based on a one-year of directly related experience equivalent to one year of education or one year of education for one year of experience. Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $47.40 per hour to $56.61 per hour (approximately $92,430 - $110,390) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $4,538
