Job Information

Located in Yellowknife and reporting to the Manager, Sport and Recreation Development, as the Sport and Recreation Development Specialist, you support the development, implementation, and management of policies and programs that strengthen sport and recreation organizations and enhance participant experiences. You will contribute to improving resident well-being and advancing healthy, sustainable communities across the Northwest Territories.

Key Responsibilities
- Implement sport, recreation, and physical activity policies and programs to improve community well-being.
- Implement and administer contribution programs to enhance the quality and accessibility of local programming.
- Support Team NT initiatives to strengthen territorial, national, and international participation outcomes.
- Contribute to planning and delivery of major sport and recreation events to drive community and economic benefits.
- Build and maintain relationships with Territorial sport, recreation and physical activity organizations to improve program delivery and increase benefits to residents.
- Support initiatives that reduce barriers to participation for underserved population groups.
- Assist with research and evaluation to enhance program effectiveness and policy development.
- Ensure compliance with GNWT financial, administrative, and policy requirements.
- Support youth leadership development initiatives and community capacity building.
- Assist with implementation of the Accountability Framework with community governments.
- Collaborate with departments, governments, and non-government organizations.
- Support management of program budgets.

Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of sport, recreation, volunteer, and youth systems in the NWT.
- Understanding of program planning, leadership development, and facility planning.
- Familiarity with legislation and governance structures (elected councils, committees, recreation staff).
- Strong facilitation and group leadership skills.
- Ability to support community volunteers and organizations in program delivery.

Key Qualifications
Completion of a Bachelors degree in recreation or sport or a related field of study (Sport/Recreation Management, Outdoor Recreation Management, Bachelor of Arts Sports/Recreation, Physical Education, Kinesiology) with;
three years directly related experience of delivering sports and recreation programming;
or three years directly related experience working with sports and recreation organizations, whether paid and/or volunteer.

Acceptable Equivalency
Completion of a diploma in recreation or sport or a related field of study (Sport/Recreation Management, Outdoor Recreation Management, Physical Education, Kinesiology) with;
five years directly related experience of delivering sports and recreation programming;
or five years directly related experience working with sports and recreation organizations, whether paid and/or volunteer.
