Job Information
The Senior Advisor, Legislation and Legal Affairs is called upon to provide advice and coordinate responses regarding the varied legal issues that arise related to legislation and departmental activities in general.
The Senior Advisor is familiar with this legal framework required to play a coordinating role in the review and development of a wide range of legislation and polices, as well as administration of existing legislation, polices, and programs. They work closely with the divisions responsible for implementation of the legislation and program delivery, as well as legislative drafters and legal counsel from the Department of Justice, and contract legal counsel where necessary.
Key Responsibilities
- Provides expert advice in the areas of legislation and departmental policies.
- Leads the development of departmental legislative initiatives, including new acts and regulations and legislative amendments.
- Ensures the effective administration of responses to departmental legal issues.
- Evaluates Departmental policies and programs to determine their effectiveness in meeting legislative requirements.
- Participates in interdepartmental and intergovernmental committees focused on legislative development.
Key Qualifications
- An undergraduate degree in a related field and a degree program in law (LLB/JD), as well as a minimum of three (3) years' experience working with law and legislation, experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of legislation, and experience in writing and researching formal advisory and decision documents.
- Related fields may include commerce, political science, criminology/criminal justice, or legal studies
- Equivalencies may include:
- A master's degree in a related field and a degree program in law (LLB/JD), as well as a minimum of one (1) year experience working with law and legislation, experience in the development, implementation and evaluation of legislation, and experience in writing and researching formal advisory and decision documents.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $62.38 per hour to $74.51 per hour (approximately $121,641 - $145,295 annually) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
