Job Information

Located in Behchoko- the Assistant Cook reports to the Long Term Care Facility Coordinator, and supports the Lead Cook in preparing and serving nutritious meals and snacks for residents of the Long-Term Care Facility. This role helps ensure meals are prepared safely, meet dietary and nutritional requirements, and are served in a clean, respectful, and resident-focused environment. The Assistant Cook also maintains food safety, sanitation, and kitchen operations while promoting the use of traditional foods whenever possible.

KEY RESPONISIBILITES

  • Assist with preparing and serving meals and snacks according to approved menus and therapeutic diets.
  • Maintain food safety, infection prevention, and kitchen sanitation standards.
  • Support menu planning, inventory control, and food storage procedures.
  • Assist with special meals and events, including traditional food preparation.
  • Operate and maintain kitchen equipment safely and assist with kitchen operations in the absence of the Lead Cook.
  • Communicate resident dietary needs or concerns to the care team.

KEY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Completion of grade 12 
  • 1 year of institutional or commercial cooking program 
  • Experience working with an elderly population would be an asset. 
  • An acceptable criminal records check is required and must be maintained.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS 

  • CPR and Basic First Aid training 
  • WHMIS Training 
  • Food Safety Training (Food Handling certification)

Equivalencies may include

  • Several years of commercial cooking experience may be accepted instead of a one-year cooking program. 
  • A high school equivalency diploma (GED) may satisfy the Grade 12 requirement. Comparable food safety, CPR, and WHMIS certifications from recognized providers are usually acceptable. 
  • All other equivalencies will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in a Long-Term Care kitchen and dining environment.
  • Regular standing, walking, lifting, bending, and repetitive tasks.
  • Frequent exposure to hot equipment, cleaning chemicals, and commercial kitchen equipment.
  • May be required to work weekends, holidays, and rotating shifts to support 24/7 resident meal services.
