Department Information

The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.

Job Information

The Information Systems Shared Services (ISSS) team in Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) builds and maintains software applications, platforms and ecosystems for government departments to support program delivery to the citizens of the Northwest Territories.

As the Senior Database Administrator, you will be responsible for the design and management of the core data and database management services operated by the ISSS. This includes core database and data warehouse architectures; database implementation, management and operations; and Business Intelligence (BI), visualization and analytics platform services to support departmental operational and strategic planning and decision-making.

Located in Yellowknife, you will be part of the Data & Analytics team that focuses on delivery and operations of data platforms, analytics and BI solutions. You will have the opportunity to grow your own skillset as you work with other technical experts in the OCIO.

The successful applicant is an expert in enterprise-level database platforms, such as Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle Enterprise Database, ensuring the planning, architecture, design, security, administration and documentation of new and amended database management systems deliver agreed value to stakeholders and clients and meet the highest standards of data reliability and resiliency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develops and maintains specialist knowledge of database and data warehouse concepts, design principles, architecture, software and facilities. 
  • Develops, executes and automates procedures and maintains documentation for databases and data platforms.
  • Applies a variety of visualization techniques and designs the content and appearance of data visuals. 
  • Applies and ensures compliance of security administration procedures. 
  • Performs release management activities associated with complex system or solution implementations, upgrades and enhancements. 

Key Qualifications

  • Completion of an undergraduate degree in computer science, management information systems or business with 4 years or more of relevant experience and progressive experience in database design, implementation and administration. 

Equivalencies 

  • Completion of a post-secondary diploma in a relevant field with 6 years of directly relevant and progressive experience in database design, implementation and administration. 
  • Completion of a post-secondary certificate in a relevant field with 7 years of directly relevant and progressive experience in database design, implementation and administration. 
  • All other equivalencies will be assessed on a case-by-case basis.
