Department Information
The Department of Finance has the mandate to provide leadership and direction to the public service in all areas of finance and human resource management. This mandate includes negotiating major financial arrangements with the federal government, providing analysis and advice to the Financial Management Board, and ensuring that financial and information resources are managed effectively, efficiently and economically. This mandate also includes the recruitment and retention of a competent public service that is representative of the people it serves and the development of programs and services that effectively serve the human resource needs of the public service.
Job Information
Are you a skilled communicator with a talent for translating complex information into clear, engaging messages? The Department of Finance is seeking a Communications Officer to support strategic communications initiatives for the Departments of Finance and Executive and Indigenous Affairs. In this role, you will help shape how government programs, policies, services, and priorities are communicated to employees, stakeholders, media, and the public.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide strategic communications advice and support to ensure messaging is accurate, coordinated, effective, and aligned with GNWT priorities.
- Develop, implement, and support communications plans, campaigns, products, and materials, including publications, web content, speeches, speaking notes, and public messaging.
- Support media relations activities, monitor media coverage, analyze emerging issues, and contribute to communications responses during high-profile or sensitive situations.
- Manage and maintain departmental internet and intranet content, ensuring information remains current, accessible, and consistent with GNWT standards and branding requirements.
- Collaborate with departmental staff, stakeholders, and other GNWT departments to develop innovative communications solutions that enhance awareness of programs, services, and government initiatives.
Key Qualifications:
- A degree in Communications, Journalism, Public Relations, or a related field; and Two (2) years of directly related communications experience.
Equivalent Education and Experience
- Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered. Examples may include:
- Diploma in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism, English, Political Science, or a related discipline, combined with progressive communications experience;
- Experience developing and implementing communications plans and campaigns;
- Experience writing for multiple audiences including the public, media, executives, and employees;
- Experience managing websites, social media, or digital communications platforms;
- Experience providing communications advice in a government, public sector, Indigenous government, non-profit, or corporate environment.

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $54.44 per hour to $65.03 per hour (approximately $106,158 - $126,809.) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $3,700.
