Housing NWT provides access to adequate, suitable and affordable housing through the provision of housing programs and services based on need.

The incumbent will be responsible for completing important preventative and corrective maintenance work on Housing NWT assets within assigned communities and districts. Work assignments will be generated through work orders and may arise from preventative maintenance inspections, identified repair requirements, or requests from District Offices and Local Housing Organizations (LHOs).

The incumbent will work as part of a Housing NWT trades and maintenance team, collaborating closely with other trades professionals across the Northwest Territories, District staff, LHOs and other Housing NWT colleagues.

The incumbent will work independently while contributing to a coordinated team approach to the delivery of maintenance services. Work will be guided by Housing NWT policies, procedures and standards related to maintenance management, health and safety, applicable legislation and codes.

The incumbent will be responsible for completing assigned work, documenting maintenance activities and supporting the effective maintenance and operation of Housing NWT assets. The position may require travel to communities within the assigned district to complete preventative maintenance, repairs and other assigned work.

Housing NWT is looking to hire Housing Maintainers for the communities of Inuvik, Norman Wells and Fort Simpson.

Flexible or remote work arrangements may be considered where operational requirements permit. Due to the hands-on nature of the position, the incumbent must be available to attend Housing NWT properties and communities as required to complete maintenance, repair and preventative maintenance activities.

Knowledge, Skill and Abilities: 

• Knowledge of building and mechanical trades in order to maintain government assets
• Knowledge of northern building construction in order to understand building structures and be able to maintain them
• Ability to use and work in International System of Units (SI - the metric system) as many tools and parts are in metric
• Skilled in operation and maintenance of equipment in order to work independently to maintain and repair a variety of assets
• Knowledge of the following codes, legislations and other documents related to building trades and the ability to reference and interpret individual items from the code books, legislation or other documents including: National Building Code, Canadian Electrical Code, Canadian Plumbing Code, Northwest Territories Fire Code, Workers Safety and Compensation Commission (WSCC) safe work practices, Maintenance Management System Manual and various Equipment Operating Manuals
• Ability to perform administrative tasks and the ability to use and/or learn to use a variety of software programs to assist the district office in carrying out agency objectives

Typically, the above qualifications would be attained by:

Journey Certified Housing Maintainer and one (1) year of related experience.

A Class 5 Driver's License is required.
