The Department of Health and Social Services works under the direction of the Minister and Deputy Minister, in partnership with the Health and Social Services Authorities, to support the health and wellbeing of people across the NWT through planning, development, evaluation and reporting on program and service delivery.

The Social Epidemiologist leads epidemiological initiatives and projects for the Child and Family Services (CFS) division. 

The Social Epidemiologist provides strategic direction, analytical capacity and evidence-based support to a variety of stakeholders involved in the delivery of programs and services that promote, protect and enhance the health and wellbeing of NWT residents.  This role protects data integrity and confidentiality, in the timely and accurate analysis to support decision-making with regard to program development and/or resource allocation priorities within the NWT. 

Key Responsibilities

• Contributes to ongoing accurate and timely analysis and reporting systems within the division, Department, CFS system, Indigenous governments, public and other recipients.
• Ensures information gathered by data collection systems is accurate, timely and useable. 
• Coordinates and contributes to the production of reports and reviews. 
• Designs new or improves surveillance or data collection methods to effectively and efficiently monitor trends in child and family services and other social determinants of health and wellbeing.
• Provides professional advice and expertise to ensure that information provided by the Department meets epidemiological and statistical standards.
• Participate and/or represent the Department in working groups or committees at the Federal/Provincial/Territorial levels.

Key Qualifications

• A master level degree in social science (e.g., epidemiology, biostatics, public health, sociology) with two (2) years of experience in statistical analysis.
