Job Information
The Fire Management Geomatics Analyst is the senior technical specialist responsible for providing advanced geomatics and spatial analysis expertise in support of the Northwest Territories wildfire and forest management programs. Based in Fort Smith and reporting to the Manager of Fire Operations, the position develops and manages geographic information, remote sensing products, spatial databases, and analytical tools that support wildfire operations, forest management, planning, research, and decision-making across the territory.
The Analyst leads the collection, integration, analysis, and management of spatial data, ensuring data quality, integrity, security, and compliance with established standards. Working closely with regional staff, GIS professionals, government partners, and contractors, the position provides technical guidance, mentorship, and operational support while developing innovative geospatial solutions to address complex land and resource management challenges.
This role is critical to ensuring timely, accurate, and reliable information is available to support wildfire response, risk mitigation, environmental monitoring, and the protection of communities, infrastructure, and natural resources throughout the Northwest Territories.
Key responsibilities:
- Plans and manages fire management GIS special data needs, including vector and raster data.
- Leads technical projects to support research and planning activities by conceptualizing, designing, developing, and executing advanced spatial analysis and presentation that integrates data from a diverse range of sources.
- Supports fire management planning activities.
- Provides expert technical advice and support at the regional level related to the fire program on geomatics, issues and technical challenges related to geomatics.
- Working with Informatics and the GNWT Centre for Geomatics plays a key role in the identification of emerging issues and the development of solutions related to geomatics.
- Provides support for work planning related to GIS projects.
Key requirements:
A bachelor¿s degree in geography or a natural resources management related field, and one of the following:
- A certificate or a diploma from a recognized technical institute in GIS OR
- The incumbent can demonstrate that the core GIS curriculum in the degree program is equivalent to such a certificate or diploma.
- PLUS, there (3) years of related and current experience gained within the last four (4) years at the analyst level.
- Obtain or ability to obtain a valid passport
- Obtain Class 5 Drivers License

Salary Information
The salary range for this position is from $59.62 per hour to $71.22 per hour (approximately $116,259 - $138,879) plus an annual Northern Allowance of $7,100.
