Job Information

The Relief Assistant Cook supports the Head Cook in preparing and serving safe, nutritious and well-balanced meals and snacks for students, staff and visitors.

The position helps ensure food services meet T¿¿¿ch¿ Community Services Agency (TCSA), GNWT and applicable food safety and nutritional standards. The Relief Assistant Cook may be responsible for the kitchen in the absence of the Head Cook.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with planning, preparing and serving daily meals and snacks.
  • Support the preparation of meals that meet nutritional and special dietary requirements.
  • Maintain food safety, sanitation and kitchen cleanliness standards.
  • Assist with food purchasing, inventory control and waste/recycling procedures.
  • Operate kitchen equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Provide respectful and professional service to students, staff and visitors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and use tact and discretion when dealing with student dietary needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Completion of a recognized commercial cooking program.
  • One (1) year of experience in institutional cooking.
  • Knowledge of food preparation, food safety and sanitation practices.
  • Ability to prepare meals and snacks in accordance with menus and special dietary requirements.
  • Ability to work effectively in a busy kitchen and as part of a team.
  • Ability to safely operate commercial kitchen equipment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Successful completion of a criminal record check, which must be maintained throughout employment.

Assets:

  • Experience working with a student population.
  • Ability to speak T¿¿¿ch¿.

Equivalencies can include

  • Three (3) years of cooking experience in a commercial or institutional kitchen may be accepted in lieu of completion of a commercial cooking program.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and related experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Working Conditions

  • Relief work is provided on an as-and-when-required basis and may involve short-notice shift coverage.
  • Work is performed in a busy school kitchen environment with regular interaction with students, staff and visitors.
  • The position requires standing for extended periods, lifting and carrying supplies, and frequent use of kitchen equipment.
  • The position requires compliance with food safety, sanitation and workplace health and safety requirements.
  • The Relief Assistant Cook may be required to assume responsibility for kitchen operations when the Head Cook is absent.

Relief Worker

This job opening is for a Relief position where there are no established hours of work on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and may be required to report to work on an as and when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.

Salary Information

The salary for this position starts at $36.53 per hour (approximately $71,233.50 per annum) plus a pro-rated annual Northern Allowance of $2.84 per hour.
