Job Information

The Relief Bus Driver provides safe, reliable and timely transportation for students to and from school and school-related activities.

The position is responsible for the safe operation of a school bus, student supervision during transportation, and compliance with applicable legislation, safety standards, and TCSA policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

  • Safely transport students and passengers according to established routes and schedules.
  • Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip inspections and report maintenance or safety concerns.
  • Operate the school bus safely in varying road, traffic and weather conditions.
  • Maintain appropriate student behaviour and promote a safe, respectful environment.
  • Maintain required vehicle, inspection and incident records.
  • Respond appropriately to emergencies and follow established safety procedures.
  • Complete routine maintenance and minor servicing, as required.
  • Communicate effectively with students, parents/guardians, school staff and supervisors.
  • Maintain confidentiality and demonstrate respectful, culturally appropriate interactions.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Key Qualifications

  • Valid Northwest Territories Class 2 driver's license with Air and Bus Endorsements by the date of hire. Registration in the required course and/or examination may be considered.
  • Grade 12 education.
  • One (1) year of professional driving experience is preferred.

Working Conditions

  • Relief work is provided on an as-and-when-required basis and may include short-notice shift coverage.
  • Regular transportation may involve approximately 60 students and up to 100 km of driving per school day.
  • Some travel to other locations may be required.
  • Work involves driving in varying road and weather conditions.
  • The position requires regular vehicle inspections and may involve routine maintenance tasks requiring bending, crouching, kneeling and lifting.
  • The position requires sustained attention and responsibility for student safety while operating the school bus.
  • Compliance and Safety
  • The incumbent must comply with applicable legislation, including the Education Act and Motor Vehicles Act and Standards, as well as TCSA policies, school procedures and workplace health and safety requirements.

This job opening is for a Relief position where there are no established hours of work on a daily, weekly or monthly basis and may be required to report to work on an as and when required basis for facilities where services operate on a daily basis throughout the entire year.

The salary for this position starts at $37.90 per hour (approximately $73,905. per annum) plus a pro-rated annual Northern Allowance of $2.84 per hour.
