Please find attached the SLWB 30-day Spill Report for the abovementioned event. The same information has been updated via the CER OERS. An update will be provided when review of the most recent environmental assessment data is complete. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out directly. Thanks, Christine Wickens, P.Eng. Environment & Regulatory Advisor Imperial christine.a.wickens@exxonmobil.com P 587 476 5007 Received an update via email. / Status: Complete ☐ Ongoing ☒ – If ongoing, anticipated clean up completion date: Description of circumstances leading up to the release: While working at BPT 2, an Operator noticed water bubbling at surface and a sheen. How was the release identified: The release was identified by a worker onsite. Steps taken to minimize, control, or stop the release: Work commenced to isolate the below grade produced water flowline in the vicinity of the bubbling. Bubbling stopped. Root cause and causal factors of the release: The root cause of this event was external corrosion of the flowline. Operational clean-up details: environmental assessment work is currently in progress (soil, groundwater, and surface water sampling) with the objective of understanding any potential risk to receptors and delineating the extent of the released material. Currently available data does not show a risk to the surface water body to the east. The need for clean-up work to mitigate environmental risk will be determined based on the results of most recent environmental assessment. // Corrective actions, if any: The Norman Wells Operations Flowline Integrity Management Plan outlines the programs in place to mitigate risk associated with flowlines in the Norman Wells field. Corrective actions include reviewing flowlines of similar vintage and service within the Norman Wells field and adjusting the integrity inspection program as needed to assess and mitigate the internal and external corrosion risk associated with operation of these lines. Corrective actions also include evaluating the leak detection system and ensuring workers are trained and understand the system (to allow for earlier detection of leaks). Impacted soil storage: Yes ☒ No ☐ Location: a temporary lined soil holding cell on Bear Island. Soil to be removed from Bear Island over winter 2020/2021 (to lined holding cell on mainland or for offsite disposal). (Carey/Answerplus)
