Giant Mine Remediation Project

Giant Mine Cooperation Agreement

On March 15, 2005 Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada (CIRNAC) and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) signed a Giant Mine Remediation Project Cooperation Agreement, which defined how the two governments would work together as co-proponents for the Project on the care and maintenance, and remediation of the Giant Mine Site. The 2005 Agreement was signed by the Minister of Resources, Wildlife and Economic Development (RWED), and witnessed by the Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA).

Renewal of the Cooperation Agreement was required to ensure it reflected the updated relationship created by the decisions included in the Environmental Assessment and because it was set to expire on March 15, 2015. This Agreement complements the Environmental Agreement by defining and clarifying the roles, commitments and liabilities of CIRNAC and the GNWT.
