Land use planning in the NWT

Wek’èezhìi Management Area

A priority for the Department of Envirnonment and Climate Change (ECC) is to promote and support the development of effective land use plans in areas where none exist. The Wek’èezhìi Management Area, located in the Bear and Slave geological provinces of the Northwest Territories, is a region without an existing land use plan in place. ECC is working collaboratively with the Tłı̨chǫ Government and the Government of Canada to examine possible next steps in creating a Wek’èezhìi Area Land Use Plan for public lands.

A land use planning process in the Wek’èezhìi Management Area would consider social, cultural, ecological and economic values in a holistic manner that supports the sustainable use of land and reflects community interests and aspirations.
