YELLOWKNIFE (March 29, 2012) – Dr. André Corriveau will assume responsibility as Chief Public Health Officer (CPHO) for the Northwest Territories effective June 2012. He was appointed by Health and Social Services Minister Tom Beaulieu.

Dr. Corriveau was previously the Chief Medical Officer of Health in Alberta and also served as Chief Public Health Officer for the Northwest Territories from 1998 to 2009. Dr. Corriveau will also continue to serve as provincial-territorial co-chair of the Public Health Network.

YELLOWKNIFE (March 23, 2012) – Media are invited to attend a teacher training workshop for the new Respect Yourself sexual health lesson plan kit being held March 26 and 27^th in Yellowknife.

The workshop will provide information to teachers to help students develop the knowledge, skills and motivation to learn about their sexual health and to make healthy choices.

YELLOWKNIFE (February 14, 2012) --  Stanton Territorial Health Authority (STHA) is joining a growing number of hospitals and healthcare facilities across Canada that are challenging the way we think about healthcare – and the role of healthcare facilities.

February 12, 2012 - Mr. Speaker, this Assembly has talked about the importance of supporting residents to be healthy, educated and free from poverty. I think most people in our territory will agree.

We need to help our children, families and communities get to a place where they feel good, can meet their own needs and contribute in a positive way to our society.

Background

IQALUIT, Nunavut (January 23, 2012) –  Students from across Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon are participating in Get Reel, a video campaign to create anti-tobacco ads, as part of this year’s pan-territorial Smoke Screening initiative.

For the eighth year, the governments of Nunavut, Northwest Territories and Yukon are promoting this educational anti-tobacco program for youth, Smoke Screening 8, which exposes students to international and local northern anti-tobacco messages through film and social media.

December 20, 2011 - On February 14, 2012 Stanton Territorial Health Authority (STHA) is going 100 per cent tobacco-free. As of that date, no tobacco use of any kind will be permitted anywhere on hospital property.

December 16, 2011 – Minister of Health and Social Services Tom Beaulieu has appointed former Northwest Territories Premier Joseph L. Handley as Public Administrator for the Stanton Territorial Health Authority (STHA) effective December 1, 2011.

“I welcome Mr. Handley into the position of Public Administrator,” said Mr. Beaulieu.  “He brings with him a wealth of experience and expertise both from within the GNWT and as a leader.  I look forward to working with him and supporting his role as Public Administrator.”

December 15, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, in setting the priorities for this new government, we have placed an emphasis on education and prevention, and on mental health and addictions.  I am pleased to report that we are already moving forward with a new campaign in this area.

December 13, 2011 - Mr. Speaker, today I would like to speak about the state of the health and social service system in the Northwest Territories. We need to take decisive action to ensure that we can continue to deliver high-quality services to our residents into the future.  Sustainability of the health care system is a national issue, and one that is of concern to Canadians across the country.   Every health system in Canada is affected by rising costs, shortage of health professionals and the health needs of an aging population.
