Premier Bob McLeod – Sessional Statement

Mr. Speaker. I would like to welcome all Members back for the resumption of the Fifth Session of the 17th Legislative Assembly.

Last month, Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories announced that it would cover the expected $20 million dollars in increased operating costs that the Northwest Territories Power Corporation faces due to extremely low water levels in the Snare Hydro System.

Girls’ Advocate Wins Nobel Peace Prize

YELLOWKNIFE (October 15, 2014) – Minister Responsible for Women Bob McLeod offered his congratulations to Malala Yousafzi on receiving the Nobel Peace Prize along with Kailash Satyarthi, Indian children’s rights advocate.

“Malala Yousafzi went against the accepted beliefs of some people in her society that says girls are of lesser value,” said Premier McLeod. “In doing so she became a target for life-threatening violence.”

Thank you. As Premier of the Northwest Territories and as someone born and raised in the North, I am pleased to be here today to present a Northern perspective on Canada’s term as Chair of the Arctic Council.

On September 9th of this year the governments of Canada and Nunavut announced that they had found the final resting place of one of the ships of the ill-fated Franklin expedition. Lost 168 years ago, the fate of Sir John Franklin and his men has been a mystery which has captured imaginations around the world ever since.

Betty House est un immeuble neuf de 18 logements qui aident les femmes et les enfants à atteindre la stabilité nécessaire pour réussir la transition vers un logement permanent.

GNWT Shields NWT Residents from Power Rate Increase

YELLOWKNIFE (September 26, 2014) – The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) demonstrated its commitment to addressing the high cost of living in the NWT when Premier Bob McLeod and Finance Minister and Minister Responsible for the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) J. Michael Miltenberger announced today that the GNWT will cover the $20 million in additional costs NTPC faces as a result of extreme low water conditions on the Snare hydro system this summer.

First Intergovernmental Council Meeting held in Yellowknife

YELLOWKNIFE (September 19, 2014) – Leaders and officials from the Government of the Northwest Territories, Inuvialuit Regional Corporation, Northwest Territory Métis Nation, Sahtu Secretariat Incorporated, Gwich’in Tribal Council, Tłı̨chǫ Government, Salt River First Nation and Denínu Kų́ę́ First Nation attended the first Intergovernmental Council meeting today in Yellowknife.
