Bob McLeod: Progress on Implementing the Mandate of the Government of the Northwest Territories, 2016-2019

Mr. Speaker, Northwest Territories’ residents want a government that is transparent and accountable.  On March 3, 2016, for the first time in the Northwest Territories, Members of the Legislative Assembly unanimously adopted a Mandate for the Government of the Northwest Territories. The purpose of the Mandate is to guide the work of the Government of the Northwest Territories over its four-year term.

Bob McLeod: Engaging with Canada on Behalf of Northerners

Mr. Speaker, a strong partnership with the Government of Canada is essential to ensuring Northerners can achieve their social, environmental and economic goals. By working with our Federal counterparts, the Government of the Northwest Territories will help create an NWT where all people can thrive and be healthy, where a strong economy provides jobs and opportunities for all our communities, and where a well-managed environment contributes to our economic well-being and quality of life.

Mr. Speaker, I would like to welcome my colleagues back to the Legislative Assembly.  As this sitting gets underway, I would like to update Members and the public on some recent activities that the government has undertaken to advance the mandate and priorities of the Legislative Assembly, in service of the people of the Northwest Territories.

Thank you all for joining us today.  And, thank you for your interest in the Northwest Territories.

I will begin by recognizing that we stand on the traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations.

It’s a pleasure for me to be back at the Mineral Exploration Round Up – and to be joined by my cabinet colleagues. We have taken the extraordinary steps of attending Roundup this year to confirm our commitment to the mining industry. 

Territories Reach New Health Care Agreement with Canada

Premiers from Yukon, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut have reached an agreement with the federal government on behalf of their governments which will increase federal funding to improve health care for northern residents.

Under the agreement, the three territories will receive an estimated $36.1 million in new funding over the next 10 years. The agreement is in addition to the annual increase to the Canada Health Transfer payments of three per cent annually or the rate of national GDP growth, whichever is higher.

Premier McLeod and Cabinet Colleagues have successful mission to Ottawa

OTTAWA (November 28, 2016) – Premier Bob McLeod and Cabinet discussed opportunities for working with the Government of Canada during a week of successful meetings with Federal Ministers, Members of Parliament and Parliamentary Standing Committees in Ottawa.

With more than a dozen meetings with Federal Ministers, Cabinet Committees and key Parliamentary Standing Committees, Premier McLeod and his Cabinet colleagues made a concerted push to build awareness in Ottawa of three infrastructure priorities related to climate change.
