Glen Abernethy: Disability Awareness Week and Disabilities Review

Mr. Speaker, Disability Awareness Week is approaching in the NWT. 

Each year we acknowledge persons with disabilities and strive to raise awareness of   challenges they may face in their daily lives with accessibility and inclusion. We also recognize volunteers who work to help persons with disabilities achieve equality within their communities during the annual Disabilities Awareness Tea.

Caroline Cochrane: Designated Authority Council Training

Mr. Speaker, our government made a commitment in its mandate to work in partnership with Aboriginal governments on a training program for First Nations governments with municipal-like responsibilities. I am very proud of the work that the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs has done to design and launch a training program to help improve the governance and management capacity of those governments.

Louis Sebert: Update on the A New Day Program

Mr. Speaker, our government is committed to taking action on the crisis of family violence. Over the past year I have heard several Members in this House stress the importance of the A New Day Program for men who use violence in intimate relationships.                                                                                                                              

Alfred Moses: NWT Apprenticeship, Trades And Occupational Certification Strategy 2017 -2022

Mr. Speaker, the Government of the Northwest Territories has made a commitment in its mandate to close the skills gap by strengthening the apprenticeship program.  Later today, I will be tabling the Apprenticeship, Trades and Occupational Certification Strategy 2017-2022.

Wally Schumann: Approach to Economic Development

Mr. Speaker, as NWT residents considering their future, our economy is top-of-mind.

As both promoter and contributor to the NWT economy, our government is working to spark economic growth across all sectors, and to foster an environment in which companies and individuals feel confident investing in Northern opportunities and jobs. 

Our agenda for economic development is three fold, we are working to responsibly unlock the potential of our non-renewable resources in a way that will both power and sustain the economic future of our territory and its communities;

Robert C. McLeod: Arsenic Monitoring in the Yellowknife Area

Mr. Speaker, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources recognizes that legacy arsenic contamination in the Yellowknife region has many residents concerned.

To this end, ENR continues to conduct monitoring, in collaboration with universities and the Government of Canada, on arsenic in water, sediments, soils and fish in the Yellowknife region.

Under-ice water sampling was done by Environment and Natural Resources at seven sites on Kam Lake and three sites on Grace Lake in April.
