December 5, 2011 – Individuals from fire departments across the NWT work tirelessly to protect our communities. The NWT Fire Service Merit Awards, announced by Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, recognize those individuals who go above and beyond the call of duty while protecting residents across the territory.
“Firefighters undertake important, and sometimes dangerous, work in all of our communities to ensure our families, friends, neighbours, and properties are protected,” said Minister McLeod. “When they are not working to fight fires in and around our communities, they are educating residents on fire prevention and safety and acting as great role models to all NWT residents.”
NWT Fire Service Merit Awards are provided each year, based on nominations from community members and fire chiefs, to honour and recognize individuals and community fire departments for their significant contributions to fire safety and fire service across the territory.
The 2011 award recipients are:
- Individual Award – Rene Camsell - Behchok0 Fire Department
- Individual Award – Kirk Hughes - Délįne Fire Department
Fire departments are a key component of protecting residents and communities across the NWT. A dedicated and educated fire service helps ensure safer communities.
