Active After School Funding Announced

News Releases

December 2, 2010 - Across the Northwest Territories, new opportunities after school for youth to be active have been created thanks to Active After School funding.

The Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs, Robert C. McLeod, says active programs after school are important because it is a period when youth tend to be less active.

“These new fun activities encourage healthy and active lifestyle choices from an early age,” said Minister McLeod. “Our partnership with the NWT Sport and Recreation Council and community leaders to deliver the programs is creating stronger and healthier residents and communities.”

The Active After School funding supports schools, and community organizations that work with schools, to create or expand on programs that get school-aged children and youth physically active.

“One of the goals for this fund was to be open to creative and innovative ideas,” stated chairperson of the NWT Sport and Recreation Council, Bridget Larocque. “Looking through the recipients and their projects, it is exciting to see the quality that exists, both in the projects themselves and the leaders who will implement them. These actions at the community level definitely assist the NWT Sport and Recreation Council in making physical activity an integral part of the lives of northern children and youth.”

Part of the Healthy Choices Framework, the new Active After School funding is fulfilling the 16th Legislative Assembly’s strategic commitment of Building Our Future by supporting communities and schools in their efforts to promote healthy and active lifestyle choices.
