YELLOWKNIFE (October 6 , 2010) - An all-weather road from Highway 7 to the Liard River has been completed and residents of Nahanni Butte can expect to receive year-round benefits.
Yesterday, Transportation Minister Michael McLeod joined the community in celebrations for the new Nahanni Butte Access Road. "This is an important investment in a community with tremendous potential," he said. "Nahanni Butte residents can look forward to a reduced cost of living and increased economic opportunities, especially from tourism, as a result of this improved access."
MLA for Nahendeh Kevin Menicoche said the project reflects the commitment of the Government of Northwest Territories to small communities. "The people of Nahanni Butte will welcome the cost savings and the opportunities this all-weather road will bring," he said. "Their future is certainly brighter today."
Chief Fred Tesou welcomed the new all-weather road. "Our residents are looking forward to saving money on everyday items and being able to travel outside the community by road," he said. "With a national park in our backyard, year-round road access will greatly improve our tourism and other economic opportunities."
Travellers by road to Nahanni Butte will be able to cross the Liard River by water taxi in the summer and ice crossing in the winter.
