Amended Regulations under the Motor Vehicles Act coming into force

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — December 17, 2025

Amendments to the Driver’s Licence Regulations and General Identification Card Regulations are set to come into force by the end of January 2026.

Helping to formalize authority and update driver endorsements, these Regulations are guided by the Motor Vehicles Act, which was last amended on March 21, 2025.

These amendments:

  • Add identity verification via facial recognition and prescribe approved vendors of facial recognition technology;
  • Update medical examination standard references;
  • Allow the Registrar to grant extensions for medical examinations;
  • Remove red tape that prevented drivers with a “G” endorsement from driving as learners outside a 100 km radius of their home community;
  • Eliminate the “N” endorsement, which was intended for taxis and bus drivers and is never used as these are already addressed through the Class 4 licence requirements; and,
  • Eliminate the fee to downgrade a driver's licence to a Class 5.

A recent release stated that these Regulations were set to come into force by the end of December 2025; this date has been revised.
