Call for Community Governments to apply for the Northwest Territories Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — January 27, 2026

Over $74 million is available to community governments as part of the Northwest Territories Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (NWT CHIF). The funding is intended for essential water, wastewater and solid waste projects to support new housing development in the Northwest Territories.

This money is available under a 10-year agreement between the Government of Canada and the Government of the Northwest Territories. The Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund agreement with the GNWT was finalized in March 2025.

Applications for projects forecasted to start in 2026 must be submitted by February 28, 2026. Applications for projects starting in 2027 and onwards must be submitted by June 30, 2026.

Eligible projects for the NWT CHIF include planning or capital projects that would plan, build or upgrade:

  • drinking water infrastructure,
  • wastewater infrastructure,
  • stormwater infrastructure, or
  • solid waste infrastructure.

Eligible projects must be identified in a community government’s current capital plan and:

  • directly enable new housing supply or preserve existing housing capacity,
  • support public infrastructure,
  • demonstrate how the investment in infrastructure will remove barriers to enable housing supply in the short term,
  • be at least $1 million in total eligible costs,
  • demonstrate a high level of project readiness, and
  • be substantially completed by September 2031.

Only expenditures incurred after a project is approved are eligible for reimbursement.

Before applying, please read the CHIF NWT Program Guide for Community Governments to inform your application. If you have any questions about applying or about the NWT CHIF, reach out to your regional Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Manager of Community Infrastructure Planning or your region’s MACA Regional Superintendent.
