February 21, 2011 - During the Aboriginal Student Achievement Minister’s Regional Forums, attendance has been identified as a concern, and to highlight the connection between attendance and student development and growth, the theme for this year’s Education Week, February 21-25, is: “Good Attendance. Good Education. Good Job.”
Alongside attendance, many youth attending the Forums feel that family and community members must take part in a student’s education. In response to the feedback, the Department of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE) developed the Thumbs Up Contest.
During Education Week, ECE is challenging residents to take part in the Thumbs Up Contest and identify ways they can help support the education system. The contest encourages families to discuss ways they can work together, and set goals to improve their learning journey. Participating families will have a chance to win one of ten Kobo e-Readers.
“Learning doesn’t start, nor stop when you walk into or out of a school,” said Minister of ECE, Jackson Lafferty. “Learning is a lifelong journey that includes the family and the community. Education is a shared responsibility and by working together, we can help our students receive the well-rounded education they deserve.”
This year also marks the 14th year of the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association’s (NWTTA) Thank You for Making a Difference campaign. Each year the NWTTA receives nominations from students who want to recognize their teachers for the difference they have made in their lives.
