YELLOWKNIFE (February 20, 2013) – February 18-22 is Education Week. The theme this year is Innovative Learning and highlights the importance of technology integration in the classroom. At the start of the school year, the Literacy with Information and Communication Technology (LwICT) curriculum was implemented in all schools across the Northwest Territories (NWT) in order to infuse technology use and media education into the Kindergarten to Grade 12 system.
“Learning is a lifelong endeavour that goes beyond the walls of the classroom,” said Minister of Education, Culture and Employment Jackson Lafferty. “We recognize that we must incorporate the progressive nature of how our world learns and communicates today, and include our northern touchstones of tradition, culture and language.”
Education, Culture and Employment has developed the Speak Up! Video Contest and is challenging students to actively participate in their own education as part of Education Week. The contest encourages youth to learn to speak another official language of the NWT and send in a video clip of themselves speaking it. Participants will receive a video compilation of all the entries as well as have a chance to win one of two Kobo eReaders.
This year also marks the 16th year of the Northwest Territories Teachers’ Association’s (NWTTA) Thank You for Making a Difference campaign. Each year, the NWTTA receives hundreds of nominations from students who want to recognize their teachers for the difference they have made in their lives. To date, the NWTTA has received more than 20,000 nominations.
