Excellence in trapping recognized

News Releases

YELLOWKNIFE (November 6, 2012) – Trappers in each region of the Northwest Territories have been honoured for their achievements during last year’s trapping season.

“These awards recognize those trappers that go the extra mile in pursuit of their craft and I want to offer my congratulations to all of the recipients for their well-deserved awards,” said Minister of Industry, Tourism and Investment David Ramsay. “We are especially pleased with our youth trappers and the number of youth involved in the trapping industry, and hope they continue to follow in the footsteps of the generations before them with their trapping traditions.”

Awards are given to the top regional trapper in four categories:

  • Highest sales – based on the cash value of harvested furs sold through the Genuine Mackenzie Valley Furs (GMVF) marketing program.

  • Highest number of pelts sold.

  • Senior Trapper – based on age and productivity in the GMVF Program.

  • Youth Trapper – based on age and productivity in the GMVF Program.

  •

A fifth award, Youth Trapper NWT, is presented to the most productive youth trapper.

Through the GMVF Program, the GNWT works in partnership with NWT trappers, the fur industry, and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources to support the territory’s traditional fur economy.

Through initiatives such as Trapper Recognition programs, the GNWT is taking steps to diversify the economy and provide all communities and regions with opportunities and choices, a key goal of the 17th Legislative Assembly.
