Family Literacy Day

News Releases

January 26, 2011Play for Literacy is this year’s theme for Family Literacy Day on Thursday, January 27. The Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Jackson Lafferty, encourages families in the Northwest Territories to take time tomorrow to remember that literacy includes more than just reading and writing.

“Literacy can involve things like watching and listening, observing, problem solving, and using technology like computers and iPods. Playing board games and card games are fun ways to improve reading, writing, math and comprehension skills,” said Minister Lafferty. “Strong literacy skills are important to help you grow, succeed, and fully participate in your community and wider society.”

Family Literacy Day is an annual national event celebrated for the past 13 years. The goal is to increase public awareness on the importance of adults and children regularly spending time together to enjoy learning activities.
