Get Home Safe: GNWT Reinforces Shared Responsibility on NWT Roads

News Releases

Yellowknife — March 11, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is reinforcing its commitment to road safety this spring through a focused three-month public awareness campaign built around one clear goal: helping Northerners get home safe.

The campaign highlights three key messages from March through May, each focused on everyday decisions that prevent collisions before they happen.

In March, the focus is “Before you go.” Road safety begins before the engine starts. Drivers are reminded to plan ahead, especially if alcohol, cannabis, or even some prescription medications are involved. Impairment does not begin behind the wheel, it begins with a decision. March 17 to 23 is National Impaired Driving Prevention Week, a national reminder that preventing impaired driving starts with individual decisions.

April shifts attention to distracted driving with the message “The road doesn’t pause if you look away.” Distraction is often automatic rather than reckless. Whether checking a map, adjusting music, reaching for coffee, or glancing at a notification, attention can shift away from the road in an instant. Drivers are encouraged to stay present and focused every time they travel.

In May, aligned with Canada Road Safety Week, the message becomes “Road safety works when we all do our part.” Every road is shared, and every decision affects someone else. Drivers, pedestrians, cyclists, commercial operators, and road workers all rely on one another to move safely through the transportation system.

The campaign will run across social media, radio, digital platforms, and community channels. It reinforces simple, consistent actions: slow down, pay attention, drive sober, and buckle up.

There’s a lot on the line. Get home safe.

“Road safety in the Northwest Territories depends on individual responsibility and shared awareness. Our roads connect communities, support essential services, and often include long, isolated stretches. Safe travel requires preparation, attention, and a commitment from all of us to do our part.”
