GNWT Advises of Upcoming Seasonal Ferry Closures

Public Service Announcement

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) advises travellers that all NWT ferry services are nearing their seasonal closing dates and may close soon.

On average, ferry services close between October 30 and November 3. The following ferries are expected to close for the season soon:

  • Arctic Red River/Mackenzie River ferry: MV Louis Cardinal, serving Tsiigehtchic and Fort McPherson
  • Peel River ferry: CF Abraham Francis, serving Fort McPherson
  • Liard River ferry: MV Lafferty, serving Fort Simpson
  • Mackenzie River/N’dulee ferry: MV Johnny Berens, serving Wrigley

Ferries will continue to operate as long as conditions are safe, but closures may occur with little notice as winter conditions develop. The GNWT will monitor conditions and make every effort to provide notice 72 and 24 hours before closures. However, rapidly changing conditions may result in less notice.

Residents are encouraged to transport essential goods and supplies while ferry services are still available. Winter and ice roads are not expected to be operational until December or early January, depending on weather conditions.
