GNWT congratulates Łutsël K'é Dene First Nation and West Point First Nation on community-led housing projects

Yellowknife — July 8, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is congratulating West Point First Nation and Łutsël K'é Dene First Nation on the successful completion of two community-led housing projects that have added 26 new homes in Hay River and Łutsël Kʼé.

On June 28, West Point First Nation celebrated the opening of 16 new homes in Hay River. On July 6, Łutsël K'é Dene First Nation celebrated the completion of 10 new homes in Łutsël K'é. Both housing projects were planned and delivered by the respective Indigenous governments to address locally identified housing priorities.

The GNWT, through Housing NWT, provided financial support to both projects through the Community Housing Support Initiative. The initiative helps Indigenous governments, community governments and community organizations develop and deliver housing projects that reflect local priorities and address community housing needs. Through community leadership and partnerships, the initiative supports increased access to housing for families, Elders and seniors, and single-member households.

These two completed projects highlight the leadership of Indigenous governments in advancing housing solutions that reflect community priorities. They also demonstrate the value of partnerships that increase housing supply and create immediate benefits for residents. In Łutsël K'é, five households on the Housing NWT waitlist were matched with homes through the community-led housing project, providing stable housing sooner while reducing pressure on social housing demand in the community.
