GNWT Enters Third Year of Waste Paper Products Initiative

News Releases

March 1, 2011 - Applications are now being accepted for the third year of the Waste Paper Products Recycling Initiative in the Northwest Territories (NWT).

The three-year funding initiative provides financial assistance to NWT municipalities, organizations, businesses, and individuals to initiate and develop innovative ways to reuse waste paper and cardboard products destined for landfills.

“Waste paper and cardboard continues to make up a large portion of community landfills in the NWT,” said Minister of Environment and Natural Resources (ENR) J. Michael Miltenberger. “If we can reduce the amount of waste we produce, and reuse these products to create useful materials, we can extend the life of our landfills, reduce the greenhouses gas emissions associated with shipping these materials south and have new products that we can use in everyday life.”

In other regions, paper products have been used in compost, and to manufacture products like cellulose insulation, fuel bricks and pellets, packing materials, wallboard and animal bedding.

“This initiative is in its third and final year,” said Minister Miltenberger. “As it comes to a close, I am looking forward to seeing the final creative proposals.”

The deadline to apply for the Waste Paper Products Recycling Initiative is April 30, 2011. For more information, visit

The 16th Legislative Assembly has committed to supporting initiatives and investments that will promote a sustainable environment for present and future generations. This initiative builds on that commitment and results in the improved environmental planning, protection, monitoring and management as envisioned in the Northerners Working Together plan.
