March 18, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories is joining the Government of Canada and other provinces in responding to last week’s tragic earthquake and tsunami in Japan.
“Our prayers and thoughts are with the people of Japan, and with those NWT residents who have loved ones in the area,” said Premier Floyd K. Roland.
The GNWT will contribute $50,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to assist with humanitarian relief efforts. Emergency officials with the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs are also engaged in the federal-provincial-territorial coordination of relief efforts.
“For years, the NWT has been a popular destination for Japanese residents and political officials,” the Premier noted. “Many personal and economic ties exist between the NWT and Japan. This tragedy has impacted many of our residents.”
