GNWT opens funding for community greenhouse gas reduction projects

News Releases

Yellowknife — March 31, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is now accepting applications for funding to support projects that reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and replace fossil fuel use across the territory.

Funding is available through the Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund (LCELF), with support from the Government of Canada. The program helps eligible organizations plan and deliver practical energy projects that lower emissions, reduce fuel use, and support more affordable and reliable energy in NWT communities.

Eligible projects include building energy retrofits, renewable and biomass heating systems, fuel switching, waste-to-energy initiatives, methane capture, and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

This funding is available to eligible organizations, such as Indigenous governments and organizations, community governments, public agencies, and other qualifying partners. Individual homeowners are not eligible to apply directly. Residents with ideas for community projects are encouraged to speak with their local government or Indigenous organization.

Projects must have a minimum total cost of $100,000 and funding can cover between 25 and 75 per cent of eligible project costs, depending on the project. Multi-year projects may be considered.

Applications are open from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2027, and will be evaluated quarterly starting Jun 30, Sept 30, Dec 31, and Mar 31
