The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) has released the What We Heard Report summarizing feedback gathered during engagement on whether the Northwest Territories (NWT) should submit a bid to host the 2035 Canada Winter Games.

Between June 8 and June 25, 2026, the GNWT invited input from key partners and the public through an online survey, written submissions, and dedicated engagement sessions. The engagement findings in this report reflect the 354 survey responses and four written submissions received from organizations by the time the report was completed.

Participants identified significant opportunities associated with hosting the Games, including infrastructure investment, sport and recreation development, tourism growth, youth engagement, economic activity, community pride, cultural celebration, and stronger partnerships that could create lasting benefits across the NWT. However, participants also emphasized the importance of careful planning and responsible decision-making, citing concerns about affordability, housing, healthcare, accommodation and workforce capacity, regional equity, and financial risk. Many stressed that any investment should align with territorial priorities and deliver meaningful long-term benefits for residents and communities across the NWT.

The GNWT will use input from this engagement, partner submissions, ongoing engagement with key partners, and the completed feasibility assessment to inform its decision on whether to proceed with a bid to host the 2035 Canada Winter Games. The GNWT is required to advise the Canada Games Council of its decision by fall 2026.
