GNWT Working With the Town of Norman Wells

News Releases

May 9, 2011 - The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is working closely with the Town of Norman Wells and Imperial Oil Limited (IOL) to monitor and address any impacts associated with the potential shutdown of Imperial Oil operations in Norman Wells.

The potential shutdown is a result of the recent pipeline spill in northern Alberta that is preventing IOL from shipping oil south in the Norman Wells Pipeline.  An extended shutdown has the potential to disrupt the supply of natural gas to the residents of Norman Wells.  Natural gas is used for space heating, cooking and water heating in residences and businesses.

There is no immediate risk to public safety in Norman wells and residents continue to have access to natural gas. Premier Floyd Roland has spoken to Norman Wells Mayor Dudley Johnson and officials from the GNWT are in close communications with Town officials.

The GNWT will continue to monitor the situation and work with the Town and IOL.  Should conditions warrant, the GNWT will work with the Town and support their efforts to ensure that the supply of gas to residents is maintained.
