YELLOWKNIFE (October 8, 2015) – The groundbreaking ceremony for the new state-of-the-art Stanton Territorial Hospital represents the beginning of the largest infrastructure project in the Northwest Territories history that will provide health care service for future generations of residents.
Being built by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) in partnership with Boreal Health Partnership (BHP), the new hospital will provide services to all the people of the Northwest Territories and the Kitikmeot region of Nunavut. The new facility is based on the most current hospital standards and will provide 100% single patient rooms throughout the facility and have 20% more beds (100) than the current facility (80).
“The new Stanton Territorial Hospital will usher in a new age of health care service for residents of the Northwest Territories,” said Minister of Health and Social Services Glen Abernethy. “The GNWT is committed to providing the best health care possible for current and future residents of the territory and the new facility will better meet the future health care needs of the NWT for decades to come.”
With construction scheduled to be completed by late 2018, the new 280,000 square-foot facility will have a larger enhanced emergency department and medical laboratory; enhanced additional space for diagnostic imaging and improved medical technology to modernize hospital operations. It will also have additional space for ambulatory care including specialist clinics, medical day care and dialysis; and more space for support services such as sterile reprocessing and biomedical engineering.
The construction project will cost $350 million. After the hospital goes into service in 2018 the GNWT will pay the consortium $18 million per year over 30 years to maintain the building. The P3 project is expected to save the people of the Northwest Territories at least $150 million over the course of the contract compared to a traditional design and build project.

Boreal Health Partnership is a consortium consisting of Carillion/Hochtief PPP Solutions North America/Bird Capital as the developers, with Bird Construction, Clark Builders and Kasian Architects as the Design Builder and Carillion Canada Inc. as the Service Provider.
