YELLOWKNIFE (October 15, 2012) – The Minister of the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs recently recognized graduates of the School of Community Government’s Community Recreation Leaders Certificate Program and Recreation Leaders completing Occupational Certification in the recreation field. Four NWT residents were recognized this year and will go on to continue to develop recreation programs in communities across the NWT.

“Programs through the School of Community Government build capacity in our communities and help to improve the quality of life for NWT residents,” said the Honourable Robert C. McLeod, Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs. “Graduates of the Recreation Leader Certificate program will create opportunities for people to get involved in healthy activities and come together as a community.”

The 2012 graduates are:

  • Gloria Gaudet – Charter Community of Deline Occupational Certification in Recreation

The Community Recreation Leaders Certificate program started in 2009 and was developed to help build capacity in recreation programming across the north. To date 16 courses involving participants from 30 communities have been delivered. The certificate program involves 10 courses and fieldwork assignments students complete in their home communities. All courses in the program are accredited for transfer to the College of the Rockies’ Tourism and Recreation Management Certificate and Diploma programs, which provide opportunities for graduates to further their education.

By providing training opportunities that also increase recreation opportunities for NWT residents, the Government of the Northwest Territories is meeting its goal of developing sustainable, vibrant communities of healthy, educated residents as outlined in the 17th Assembly’s vision of Believing in People and Building on the Strengths of Northerners.
