Have your say on the draft Wek’èezhìı Boreal Caribou Range Plan

News Releases

Yellowknife — March 26, 2026

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is looking for feedback on the draft Wek’èezhìı Boreal Caribou Range Plan.

The draft range plan outlines a coordinated approach to maintaining and restoring boreal caribou habitat in the Wek’èezhìı region. Boreal caribou are listed as Threatened in the Northwest Territories under both federal and territorial Species at Risk legislation.

The draft range plan was developed collaboratively with Indigenous governments, Indigenous organizations, renewable resource and other partners. It incorporates the best available Indigenous, local, and scientific knowledge. It identifies actions to manage habitat disturbance, guide land and resource use, and monitor conditions over time, while supporting sustainable development and community priorities.

Feedback received during the engagement period will be reviewed and considered in finalizing the range plan.

Residents and interested organizations can review the draft plan and submit comments by April 17, 2026 at: haveyoursay.nwt-tno.ca/2026-wek-eezhii-caribou-range-plan

Quote

“Boreal caribou are an important part of the land, culture, and way of life in the Northwest Territories. This range plan reflects a collaborative, balanced approach that brings together Indigenous knowledge, science, and community priorities to protect caribou habitat while supporting responsible development. Public input is an important part of getting this right, and I encourage every resident of the North to share their perspective as we move toward a final plan.

- Jay Macdonald, Minister of Environment and Climate Change
