The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is asking for feedback on the territory’s minimum wage through a survey. Findings from the survey are published annually and your identity is kept anonymous.
In 2022, the GNWT updated the way minimum wage within the territory is determined. Minimum wage is adjusted annually using a formula based on the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index for Yellowknife and the percentage change in the average hourly wage in the Northwest Territories (NWT) for the preceding calendar year.
2026 will mark the third and final year that the GNWT conducts an annual survey on minimum wage. Moving forward, the GNWT will conduct minimum wage surveys every three years. The information collected through the surveys gives a better understanding of the impacts of the annual minimum wage adjustments since the implementation of the formula. Although the GNWT is committed to using the annual formula, collecting data on public sentiment on this approach may help inform future decisions about the minimum wage.
The results from the first and second minimum wage surveys were published in What We Heard reports. Results from this survey will also be published in a What We Heard report.
The survey will close on June 2nd, 2026.
The minimum wage in the Northwest Territories is $16.95 per hour. Adjustments to the minimum wage take effect on September 1 annually.
