NT Energy and the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) are pleased to announce the launch of Hay River’s first Level 3 Electric Vehicle (EV) Fast Charger. This 100kW charger, installed as part of the GNWT’s 2030 Energy Strategy and 2022-2025 Energy Action Plan, marks a significant milestone in reducing transportation emissions and brings the NWT closer to establishing a zero-emission vehicle corridor. There will be two Level 3 charging stations along with two Level 2 charging stations installed at the Hay River location, allowing several vehicles to charge at the same time.
By installing EV chargers in hydroelectric-powered communities, the GNWT is making strategic infrastructure investments to support electric vehicle adoption, enhance energy affordability in the North, and help combat climate change. Infrastructure for electric vehicles helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, create new customers for utilities, and contribute to stabilizing electricity rates in the NWT. NT Energy is also working to install chargers in Behchokǫ̀ and Fort Smith.
In 2023, Naka Power, with the support of the GNWT, installed two EV chargers in Yellowknife and has plans to add chargers in Fort Providence and Enterprise next year. These installations align with the vision of an EV charging corridor that will eventually span from Yellowknife to the NWT-Alberta border.
Quotes
“This is the initial Level 3 Charging Station in the NWT outside of Yellowknife and helps signal to residents and visitors that use of electric vehicles is encouraged and access to charging infrastructure is advancing. NT Energy will be completing construction of charging stations in Fort Smith and Behchokǫ̀ later this fall, helping to make travel within our larger communities as well as to and from Alberta much more convenient for EV drivers.”
- Cory Strang, NTPC President and CEO
“The installation of this Level 3 EV Fast Charger supports the 2030 Energy Strategy’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from vehicles by 10% per capita and aligns with one of the key mandate priorities of the 20th Assembly—to leverage federal funding to close the infrastructure gap through investments in green power generation, transmission, and transportation networks. By working with communities and electricity providers to expand EV infrastructure, we are taking meaningful steps toward a zero-emission vehicle corridor, contributing to a more sustainable future for the NWT, and making EV ownership a viable option for residents, businesses, and governments alike.”
- Caroline Wawzonek, Minister of Infrastructure
Quick facts
- The investment in the NWT EV Corridor comes from a combination of sources:
- New funding under the GNWT’s 2022-25 Energy Action Plan ($1.76 million)
- The GNWT’s GHG Grant Program, which is supported by the Government of Canada’s Low Carbon Economy Leadership Fund ($1.5 million)
- The GNWT’s Electric Vehicle Infrastructure Program, which is supported by the Government of Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program ($350,000).
- NT Energy is a wholly owned subsidiary of NT Hydro, which in turn is owned by the GNWT. It is a sister company of the Northwest Territories Power Corporation (NTPC) and engages in projects and initiatives which are separate from NTPC activities regulated by the NWT Public Utilities Board.
