Health and Social Services Department Accepts OAG Report

News Releases

March 1, 2011 - The Department of Health and Social Services has accepted all recommendations from the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

The final report, which was tabled in the Legislative Assembly today, indicates the Department, through A Foundation for Change, has set clear direction, priorities and actions.

“I am pleased that the report supports the direction outlined in A Foundation for Change to implement changes to improve the NWT health and social services system,” said the Minister of Health and Social Services, Sandy Lee.“We will continue to take every opportunity to improve and work together with people, communities, governments and agencies to address health and wellness challenges and to ensure that our system is aligned with the needs of our residents and communities.”

The report also notes that the Northwest Territories, like the rest of Canada, is facing capacity challenges to monitor, evaluate and manage a complex system.

In 2010, the Office of the Auditor General completed a review of Northwest Territories health programs and services. The review concludes that the Department of Health and Social Services is adequately managing health programs and services provided to residents of the NWT. The review did not include Social Services.
