Help shape the future of Pharmacy Profession Regulations in the NWT

Public Service Announcement

Yellowknife — July 26, 2024

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is seeking feedback from pharmacists, stakeholders, and the public on proposed Pharmacy Profession Regulations.

The proposed regulations aim to move the regulation of the pharmacy profession to the Health and Social Services Professions Act, the “umbrella” Act that intends to support a comprehensive and consistent framework for the regulation of all health and social services professionals in the Northwest Territories.

This approach will enhance access to medical services and align the territory with national standards while also broadening the scope of practice for pharmacists.

Key proposed amendments include:

  • Regulation of Pharmacy Technicians
  • Authorization for prescribing for minor ailments
  • Authority to initiate prescriptions within defined parameters
  • Adapting prescriptions (therapeutic substitutions)
  • Ordering and interpreting lab tests and conducting and interpreting point of care tests
  • Administering certain medications and vaccines via injection and inhalation

Pharmacists, stakeholders, and the public are invited to participate in this process by reviewing the following discussion paper and by providing feedback here or by email feedback to dhssregs_feedback@gov.nt.ca by August 30, 2024.
