Housing NWT and PCL Construction sign contract for 64-unit housing development in Yellowknife

News Releases

Yellowknife — August 19, 2026

Housing NWT is pleased to announce that a construction contract valued at $55 million has been awarded to PCL Construction Management Inc. for a new 64-unit housing development in Yellowknife. The contract marks a significant milestone in advancing much-needed social and transitional housing in Yellowknife and supports Housing NWT's ongoing efforts to increase the supply of safe, affordable housing for residents.

Located on 54th Avenue, the development will include 30 transitional housing suites and 34 social housing units, plus a new early learning and childcare space.

The 30 transitional housing suites will consist of private single units featuring a kitchenette and bathroom, along with shared communal program spaces, while the 34 social housing units will provide a range of housing options for residents. Additionally, this development will include barrier-free units and a childcare centre located adjacent to the social housing units, providing additional supports and amenities for residents.

Shovel-ready and centrally located, the 54th Avenue site is an ideal location for this development. Construction activity is projected to start this fall.

This project is funded by the Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) and the Government of Canada, including more than $24 million from the Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation’s (CMHC) Rapid Housing Sub-Stream of the Affordable Housing Fund.
