Minister of Health and Social Services Julie Green issued the following statement for Nursing Week:
“On Nursing Week, I want to celebrate and reflect on the central role nurses have in the delivery of healthcare in the Northwest Territories (NWT).
“Nurses are at the heart of the territory’s health care system, providing compassionate care to patients and their families during the most difficult times in their lives. This year’s theme, Our Nurses, Our Future, reminds residents that nurses provide ongoing support to patients as they navigate their healthcare journeys from start to finish, tackling life’s unexpected challenges with the goal of a healthy, fulfilling future.
“I want to give special recognition to those nurses who choose to practice in the NWT, improving the health of residents and communities across the territory. Nursing is a profession that can take practitioners anywhere – care is a universal need. The territory’s unique geography, many languages and vibrant culture creates a challenging and rewarding work environment – one that is best served through compassion and commitment, something NWT nurses display daily.
“When it comes to commitment, nurses around the world had their professional commitment tested during the global pandemic. They worked tirelessly, often doing back-to-back shifts, to help people suffering not only from COVID 19, but other health issues. Their commitment to their patients and communities continues to inspire.
“To all NWT nurses: we count on you everyday. You continue to set standards of care in everything you do, from the smallest gesture to the longest shift; we thank you for your passion and hard work.
“As we celebrate Nursing Week 2023, we do so with gratitude and appreciation for all that NWT nurses do. Today, on the birthday of nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale, we thank you for your unwavering dedication to provide care to all residents across the territory. Happy Nursing Week 2023.”
