YELLOWKNIFE (December 7, 2012) – Minister of Municipal and Community Affairs (MACA) Robert C. McLeod today announced the release of Community Emergency Management, a video guide to community emergency management and preparedness produced by the Department of Municipal and Community Affairs.
“Community emergency preparedness is essential to the safety and health of NWT residents,” said Minister McLeod. “Providing resources like this video to community governments across the NWT allows for better planning and preparedness in advance of emergency situations, helping achieve our government’s goal of safe communities.”
Community Emergency Management includes segments that cover various areas of emergency preparedness, response, and recovery. All community governments will receive copies of the video to use as a resource in their emergency planning efforts.
In addition to providing resources and reference material to community governments, MACA works directly with regional emergency response committees to help create and test community emergency plans. Having emergency plans that are validated through test exercises is the best way to prepare NWT residents for worst-case scenarios.
Increasing emergency preparedness capacity in communities across the territory works directly toward the 17th Legislative Assembly’s goal of sustainable, vibrant, and safe communities.
