Yellowknife — March 16, 2026

Minister of Health and Social Services Lesa Semmler released the following statement today in recognition of National Social Work Month 2026:

“As we mark Social Work Month, I extend my sincere appreciation to the social workers across the Northwest Territories whose dedication and compassion strengthen our communities every day. Their work supports residents through some of life’s most challenging and transformative moments.

This year, Canada celebrates 100 years of organized and professional social work. The centennial provides an important opportunity to reflect on the evolution of the profession and its essential role in shaping healthier, more inclusive communities.

Social work is rooted in advancing the well-being of individuals, families and communities. Social workers help people draw on their strengths and navigate complex social challenges, including poverty, family violence, and mental health concerns. Their work continues to be guided by an enduring commitment to human dignity, human rights and social justice.

This year’s theme, ‘Reflecting on our Past, Reimagining our Future,’ calls us to reflect on how practice has evolved, to uplift the voices shaping our work today, and to imagine the future of social work grounded in equity, cultural safety, and reconciliation with Indigenous peoples and communities across the North. Social workers have consistently stood alongside residents with empathy, stability and unwavering support, especially during difficult times. They strive to build trust, listen deeply, and foster a sense of belonging.

In the Northwest Territories, social workers serve in a wide range of settings, child and family services, hospitals, counselling, supported living, schools, corrections, community programs and more. Whether they are supporting seniors, helping youth find stability, assisting families in conflict, or providing counselling, their contributions make a profound difference in people’s lives.

To all social workers across the NWT: thank you. Your professionalism, patience and care reflect the very best of public service. I am grateful for the work you do, the compassion you bring, and the vital role you play in supporting the health and well-being of residents and communities throughout the territory.”
