November 19, 2010 - National Child Day on Saturday, November 20, 2010 marks the 21st anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). This year’s theme for National Child Day promotes Article 13 of the CRC which states “children have the right to freedom of expression.”
“All children have the right to express themselves, openly and without barriers, either orally, in writing or print, in the form of art or through other media of the child’s choice,” says Minister of Education, Culture and Employment (ECE), Jackson Lafferty. “I encourage all parents and caregivers to take the Day to celebrate their children.”
To celebrate the Day, ECE Service Centres are holding activities throughout the territory.
- Beaufort-Delta Region – Today, a Children’s Art Studio for all licensed early childhood programs will take place in the ECE Boardroom in Inuvik from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Other communities will be mailed resource packages so they can complete the same activities in their own classrooms.
- Dehcho Region – Craft activities for children are available to licensed child care programs and day homes.
- North Slave Region – Craft activities, snacks and a book circle for licensed day homes took place on Thursday, November 18 and today for licensed centre based programs. Free bus transportation is available to and from the events.
- Sahtu Region – Tomorrow, a children’s art activity and luncheon is open to all licensed child care programs in Norman Wells.
- South Slave Region – Craft activities are available to licensed child care programs and day homes. There is also an Early Childhood Information wall within the regional ECE Service Centre displaying licensing information, National Child Day/Rights of the Child information and photos.
