Minister of Health and Social Services Julie Green issued the following statement:
“May 9-15, 2022, is National Nursing Week. This week NWT residents, along with Canadians from across the country, are encouraged to celebrate and show their appreciation for nurses. This year’s theme is “We Answer the Call.” If you know a nurse, you know this to be true.
“Nurses everywhere have long played many roles in our lives. They are caregivers, motivators, comforting voices, and trusted advisors. Time and again nurses answer the call, no matter the required sacrifice or risk, going all the way back to Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing, whose birthday is May 12.
“We have all witnessed this firsthand during the COVID-19 pandemic. Nurses throughout the NWT health care system have demonstrated their immeasurable strength and dedication to their profession and to residents, by volunteering for redeployment, working tirelessly to care for sick patients, delivering vaccines in every NWT community, providing testing services to those who needed it, and answering the call when and where they were needed.
“This week, we celebrate the commitment demonstrated by nurses every day. We acknowledge their service to communities and all NWT residents, despite the many challenges they face. We recognize their efforts, and we offer them our support and gratitude.
“To all NWT nurses, thank you for all that you do to keep us healthy and to comfort us and care for us during our most trying times.”
