YELLOWKNIFE (October 1, 2013) - Northwest Territories talent will be on the big screen this week at the 7th Annual Yellowknife International Film Festival, which kicks off tonight with an opening reception and film screenings at the Northern Arts and Cultural Centre.

Running from October 1-6, the Yellowknife International Film Festival is an annual event put on by Western Arctic Moving Pictures. This year’s event is also sponsored by the departments of Industry, Tourism and Investment (ITI) and Education, Culture and Employment (ECE).

“The film festival is an ideal event to showcase our talented artists, and I am pleased to see so many NWT filmmakers in the line-up this year,” said Minister of ITI David Ramsay. “We have been working closely with groups involved in the film industry through the NWT Film Commission, and through this cooperation we have seen our northern film industry really flourish.”

For the first time ever, the festival will include an awards ceremony to wrap up the event. It will be held on Sunday, October 6 at NACC, and hosted by a representative from the NWT Film Commission.

Supporting local filmmakers and providing assistance through the NWT Film Commission supports economic diversification in the NWT, a key goal of the 17th Legislative Assembly.
